Top Selling Domain Names for 2014

Virtual Real Estate

December 31, 2014

Although 300 new gTLDs (Generic Top Level Domains) were released and 3.5 million domains were registered during 2014, do.tcom remains king, according to sedo.com's annual report, and the new extensions are beginning to show signs of who's in and who's out. Which domain sold for more than $1,000,000 and what is expected for 2015? The new gTLDs that will survive and profit are the ones that offer an alternative to the dot.com. So think .click, .web., and .link, because they are Internet terms that are globally used and recognized. Dot.world is a sleeper string, but if you are a domainer, you might want to grab a few before the likely pop in the ensuing months.

The highest selling domain for the year was mm.com at $1,200,000, while the most profitable new string was coffee.club for a sweet $100,000. Of the 300 new suffixes released in 2014, .club was the gTLD investment winner of the year, sweeping 7 of the top ten sales, but it had also faced little competition when it launched on January 18, 2014. It was .xyz that was crowned the 2014 gTLD overall winner with more than 750,000 domains sold, but aiding the generic domain, priced at $15, were all the other gTLDs selling for $30 to $50, and even higher for many so-called premium names.

Sedo.com*, which is the world’s largest domain marketplace and monetization provider, has announced its 2014 list of the highest-valued public domain sales of the year:

So what is in store for 2015? While past performance is no guarantee of future results, where have you heard that before, it should be a great year as 300 additional suffixes are released and as gTLDs continue to gain recognition and momentum (and appear in search results), but while demand for .com is expected to remain robust, look for strong sales with Internet nouns .link (general availability on April 15, 2014) and the newly released $9.99 .click (general availability was November 25, 2014), as well as high demand for .web since it is anticipated to be the most sought after extension for 2015, while the more expensive niche .club and less appealing, generic .xyz begin to slow.

The extensions that will survive and profit are the ones that offer an alternative to dot.com. So think .click, .web., and .link, because, even as English words, they are highly recognized Internet terms on every continent. Would you click on war.click or military.click or garden.shiksha, for instance? How about disease.blackfriday or 411.space?

One factor that will definitely plague the gTLDs for the coming year is the failure of speculators to renew. The speculators that hurled hundreds and even thousands of dollars into the new strings, only to be holding very expensive empty bags when the annual renewals hit, will be flooding the market with their domains (and tears) as their unfulfilled dreams expire without a suitor. Applicants are also going to be the losers, because, in addition to paying ICANN the annual renewal fee of $25,000, they are forced to remain married to their domains even as they die for lack of buyers. Applicants, according to ICANN, had to post a bond covering three years of operations.

But do meet cousins .web, .webs, .website, and .webcam, and will there eventually be the birth of .webpage, .webguy, and so on? And then there is .wed, which could be confused with .web, and which extension will your browser default to, .web or .webs?. So walk softly and carry a tightfisted purse, and always perform your DD.
